Course overview

This course will introduce you to upholstery materials and their characteristics, and teach you technical skills for working with and finishing fabrics. You will learn how to trace and cut various textile materials and how to cover a seat. The instructor of this course, Jessica Di Maria, has been an upholsterer for 12 years and runs her own business specializing in the restoration of stylish, contemporary and designer furniture. She offers her skills to individuals, professionals and local authorities.

For information, the course fee includes the basic equipment kit. Upon completion of your training, you will be able to leave with your refurbished seat and the tool kit you used.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will have learned:

  • the appraisal and dismantling of furniture
  • how to measure, mark out and cut the various materials used
  • upholstery techniques
  • to master upholstery tools
  • seat covering techniques

Outline and content

At the start of the program, the first two days will be devoted to :

First day :

  • presentation of the project and furniture
  • furniture dismantling and tool training
  • knowledge of textile materials for furnishing

Second day :

  • upholstery techniques
  • laying the covering and finishing

We have designed a comprehensive training program based on 80% practice and 20% theory, and focusing on five areas of learning:

Preparation of the base (18h) :

  • appraisal and dismantling of furniture
  • wood treatment
  • sanding, painting

Lining (6h) :

  • template creation
  • tracing and cutting of foam
  • bonding of parts

Seat covering (12h) :

  • mark out and cut the covering
  • laying the fabric
  • fitting the finish

Mastering the tools (2h) :

  • use and application of cutting and fastening tools

Theory (10h):

  • styles in furniture
  • different types of upholstery materials
  • the use of foams and their densities
  • the different textile materials used in furnishings
  • know how to make a cutting plan
  • knowledge of the tools used

Duration and schedule

Training takes place over a total of 48 hours spread over 4 weeks.

  • permanent entry / exit
  • small groups (maximum 5 people)

Classes run all day at the following times:

  • thursday and friday : 9h30 to 12h30 or 13h30 to 16h30

Here is some information on how the course is organized:

  • the furniture will be brought by the participant and restored during the course
  • participants will take away their restored furniture at the end of the course, along with a basic tool kit
  • practical testing will be carried out on style furniture

Evaluation methods

At the end of each module, a theoretical and practical knowledge test will be given. Students will also be asked to strap a seat.
